Equatorial Energia is a holding company investing in the Brazilian electric energy sector.
Equatorial currently operates in the
(i) distribution segment, which represents 97% of our revenues, through CEMAR, in the state of Maranhão, and CELPA, in the state of Pará,
(ii) transmission segment, still pre-operational, through 8 different projects covering the states of Pará, Piauí, Bahia and Minas Gerais ,
(iii) generation segment, jointly controlling Geramar, two thermoelectric plants,
(iv) trading segment through its indirect 51% ownership of Sol Energias, and
(v) services segment through 55 Soluções.
In Maranhão, Equatorial Energia controls CEMAR (Companhia Energética do Maranhão), the state‘s sole electric power distributor, with a concession area of 332,000 km², equivalent to 3.9% of Brazil‘s landmass. CEMAR is the second-largest distributor in the Northeast of Brazil in terms of concession area, serving 2.3 million clients and approximately 7 million people, equivalent to 3.37% of the country‘s population.
In 2016, CEMAR distributed 6,170 GWh, a 3.5% increase when compared to 2015. CEMAR serves all the 217 municipalities of Maranhão and in 2016 added 97,000 new consumers, a 3.4% increase versus the previous year, amounting to 2,358,766 consumers.
In Pará, Equatorial Energia controls CELPA (Centrais Elétricas do Pará) since November 2012, also the single electric energy distribution company in the State, which covers an area of 1,248,000 km², equivalent to 14.7% of Brazil‘s landmass. CELPA has 2.4 million customers, serving approximately 8.2 million people, equivalent to 4.0% of the country‘s population.
In 2016, CELPA distributed 9,739 GWh, a 3.4% increase when compared to 2015. CELPA serves all the 144 municipalities of Pará state and in 2016 added 132,000 new consumers, a 3.4% increase versus the previous year, amounting to 2,443,344 consumers.
The transmission segment is still a non-operational segment, whose projects are under development. The Company acquired a total of 8 projects concerning the construction and operation of lines and substations in 2 transmission greenfield auctions organized by ANEEL. The investment forecasted by ANEEL amounts to R$ 4.6 billion and the lines are expected to start operations by 2022. The Annual Revenues of the blocks won by the Company amount R$ 850 million, as of October 2016.
Equatorial Energia operates in the generation segment through Geramar, of which Equatorial holds 25% of its controlling stake. Geramar is the company responsible for implementing and operating the Tocantinópolis and Nova Olinda thermoelectric plants, in the municipality of Miranda do Norte, in the state of Maranhão, with a joint installed capacity of 332 MW, providing energy for the National Interconnected System. Authorization for the construction and operation of the Tocantinópolis and Nova Olinda plants was obtained in the A-3 Auction, held in July 2007. In this auction, 240 MW (120 MW from each plant) were sold, ensuring a total fixed annual revenue of approximately R$136.2 million (around R$68.1 million for each plant).
The plants were built by the Finnish Wärtsilä group, under the EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) system, and are fueled by high-viscosity heavy oil. The start-up was in January 2010.
Equatorial Energia SA (Equatorial) is a Brazil-based company engaged in the energy sector. The Company holds equity interest in other companies, all in the electric energy industry, mainly with operations related to generation or distribution of electric energy.
The Company's activities are divided into four segments: Distribution, responsible for energy distribution in the state of Maranhao and Para, Brazil; Generation, generating electricity through thermoelectric plants; Services / Sale, offering trading electricity, billing services, as well as maintenance of electrical installations, among others; and Central Management, including corporate and administration operations.
The Company operates through a number of subsidiaries, such as Companhia Energetica do Maranhao (CEMAR), Centrais Eletricas do Para SA (CELPA), Geradora de Energia do Norte SA (Getamar) and Equatorial Solucoes SA.
