The hangover from the murky past of HSBC's private banking business is still lingering.
HSBC (HSBC) on Tuesday reported a net loss of $4.2 billion for the fourth quarter of 2016. The biggest single hit to its battered bottom line came from a $2.4 billion writedown of the value of its private banking business in Europe.
The global banking giant has spent years shrinking down and cleaning up its private banking operations, notably in Switzerland. The business came under scrutiny over reports it catered to weapons dealers, tax evaders and dictators.
HSBC's fourth-quarter results also suffered from lower revenue and higher costs than the same period a year earlier, when it posted a net loss of $1.3 billion.
The bank's shares were down around 4% in Hong Kong after it published the earnings report.

歐洲最大銀行匯豐 (HSBC)(HSBA-UK)(0005-HK) 周二 (21 日) 發布，去年獲利意外慘摔 62%，跌到不及分析師預期的一半，歸咎於香港及英國等主要市場經濟成長減緩、歐洲私人銀行部記入高達 32 億美元的商譽減損，以及出售巴西業務帶來衝擊。股價聞訊重挫逾 5%，創 3 個多月最大跌幅。
匯豐公布，2016 年稅前獲利由前一年的 188.7 億美元劇減剩 71 億美元，遠低於經濟學家預期的 1440 億美元；去除一次性項目的調整後稅前獲利也較一年前減少 1%，降至 193 億美元。因該行第四季稅前虧損達 34 億美元，調整後稅前獲利雖增長 39% 至 26.2 億美元，但仍低於預期的 37.8 億美元。
匯豐上季調整後營收較一年前減少 3% 至 110 億美元，同樣不如市場預期的 124 億美元。營運成本增加 3% 至 84 億美元，高於預期的 83 億美元。該行所有 4 大營運部門及所有 5 個區域的獲利，全都低於瑞銀 (UBS) 預估。第一類資本適足率亦由前季末的 13.9% 降至 13.6%。
匯豐周二並宣布，今年節省支出目標將增加 10 億美元至 60 美元，但預警營收面臨逾 30 億美元的負面風險，包括來自匯價波動及英國利率降至空前新低。該行還將在今年上半新買進 10 億美元的庫藏股，但規模遜於分析師預估的 25-30 億美元。
匯豐股價周二於港股午盤一度大跌達 5.14% 至 65.45 港元，創去年 11 月以來盤中最大跌幅。收盤報 65.55 港元，下跌 5%。
