最近看到這家公司 - Reed Elsevier 覺得蠻特別的，
但網上對他的分析並不多，
想提出來請教是否有同學對這家公司有深入了解。

這家公司是英國公司(Reed)和荷蘭公司(Elsevier)合併而成，
分別在這兩個國家都有掛牌，
而ADR也有兩支RUK(英國公司)，ENL(荷蘭公司)。

Reed Elsevier從19世紀的一家荷蘭小書店
目前已成長為市值約170億美元的大企業，
是FTSE100成份股，
Wiki上2013年淨利為11億鎊，歸類為出版業。

出版業不是夕陽產業嗎 ? 怎麼這麼賺 ?
後來發現他專門出版科學、科技、醫藥、法律等專業期刊，
公司的資料庫在這些領域有領導地位。
全世界(170多國)很多大學、學術硏究機構、政府、醫療機構、
保險公司、律師事務所(北美75%的律師事務所)等都是他的客戶。
而公司營收來源也分別來自於科學科技藥物、風險解決方案
(年報有寫公司提供政府單位防詐騙、保險公司風險評估等服務)、
商務資訊、法律及展覽服務。
百分之66的營收來自於電子資料庫，並非想像中的印刷品。

年報中寫：科學家可以透過他們提供的服務提升硏究成果、
醫生可救更多生命、律師可打贏官司。
看到這裡，不知比喻是否恰當，我腦海浮現出一個字「Bloomberg」，
這家公司好像是科學家、醫生、律師的彭博社。

Reed Elsevier 百分之90以上的收自非英國本土，
北美是最大市場。
英國有一些大學對他很感冒，因為他的壟斷地位
會要求客戶要買書要整套買，不可以挑。
也有一些人認為目前網路愈來愈多免費的專業資訊，
會危及他的發展。
但我認為短期內應沒有律師敢引用Google的免費資料去打官司吧。

請教過同事，電子學術期刊大廠各自專長領域不同，
所以沒有明確競爭對手，
例如A家專賣工程科學... B家專賣醫學....。
只有語言別的差異，如大陸某領域大廠是XXX。
Elsevier之外，EBSCO是另外一家大廠，
我找不到是否有上市資料(代碼) http://www.ebscoind.com/
另外問過同事Google學術查詢是否為競爭對象，
他說是「魚幫水水幫魚」的關係，
因為廠商提供摘要讓google查得到，
但是點選取得全文則要付錢.....

查了一下，EBSCO非上市公司，
看其它的學術出版商，除了路透社外，
有些是Reed Elsevier 的子公司，
有些是大學自己的出版社，相當分散。

巴菲特與Munger在不少的場合都提過美國價值線公司(Value Line)所出版的價值線投資調查(Value Line Investment Survey)是蠻好的篩選工具。
