皇家郵政最早由國王亨利八世於1516年所創，但到1635年才對一般公眾提供服務，1650年確立「郵政總局」（General Post Office）的名稱，是中央政府的一支。皇家郵政在1840年首先推出全國一體適用的各地投遞郵資標準表，以及可貼附之郵票，是世界郵票制度之首創，也是世界上唯一郵票不印國名的國家——以女王頭像代替銘志。1870年皇家郵政開辦電報業務，1912年兼併大多數英國各地方政府的電話局，專營電話業務。直到1981年，依據國會通過的「電信法」，電信業務分出，後來並私營化，成為英國電信（BT）。
英國郵政總局1969年改為國營企業，稱為「郵局」（The Post Office）。2000年又改制為政府經營的公法人有限公司，整個集團也於2007年改稱「皇家郵政集團有限公司」（Royal Mail Group Limited）。與英國電信等不同，皇家郵政並未於柴契爾夫人擔任首相的1980年代被民營化。
英國商業創新大臣祈維信2013年7月10日於國會宣布私有化計劃。英國政府主張私有化可推動郵政業務改革，2013年秋上市，估計可籌得達三十億鎊（約三百五十億港元）資金。

- The slower decline of mail has resulted in a slower decline of several operating segments. The slower decline of these operating segments has help total revenue growth.
- In 2014, the e-commerce and software segments grew double digits. Software revenue is being driven by the company's strong product offerings and strategic partnerships.
- The cross-border e-commerce market is expected to nearly triple. Pitney's expanded partnership network and eBay relationship should help the company continue take advantage of the market's growth.
- Pitney is transitioning into a faster growing company. The company's faster growth will greatly benefit investors. Especially since, the stock isn't overvalued and offers a good dividend yield.

美國聯邦快遞（FedEx）同意以每股8歐元、總計44億歐元（48億美元，1502.54億元台幣）現金，收購荷蘭同業TNT（TNT Express，天遞），較TNT上周四（4月2日）收盤股價溢價33%。
據雙方聲明，TNT董監事會一致支持這樁交易，2011年由TNT分拆獨立的PostNL並準備轉讓手中持股。PostNL目前持有TNT約14.7%股份。
聯邦快遞為全球最大航空貨運業者，併購TNT將協助聯邦快遞拓展歐洲航空與地面運輸網絡。全球貨運快遞龍頭優比速（UPS）2年多前曾提議以69億美元收購TNT，因遭歐洲反壟斷機關阻擋而放棄。
不過，聯邦快遞與TNT表示，有信心可適時化解主管機關出現的任何市場壟斷疑慮，並預期在今年上半年完成併購交易。TNT計劃出脫旗下航空貨運業務，遵循相關法規以消除疑慮。
自優比速併購案破局後，TNT營運狀況始終不佳。受沉重的整頓成本拖累，TNT去年第4季虧損1.37億歐元，並預警今年西歐核心市場商業景況不良好，直到2016年營運可能都難以出現改善。
